Georgetown

G eorgetown, Texas is a town with a story to tell. Established in 1848, Williamson county was established as a satellite community to nearby Austin, Texas' capital. In the search for a county seat, the county fathers accepted a gift from local landowner George Washington Glasscock in return for the moniker Georgetown. While the area has evolved over the centuries, it retains its rich history of cowboys and Indians, cattle drives and the settlement of this great Texas expanse.

Southwestern University was established shortly after the county, in 1873. Students here receive a top notch education, while enjoying the benefits of the Texas Hill Country. Horseback riding, canoeing, rock climbing, hiking and cycling are all popular activities. And in order to get the most out of their free time, the University offers equipment rentals to its students for a nominal fee. The area has easy access to some of the state's best parks and watersports facilities. The nearby Gulf of Mexico is a popular destination, as are the numerous trails and climbing areas.

Georgetown

Georgetown calls itself "one of the most fastidiously preserved historical downtowns in the country". Its buildings retain their Victorian facades, antique streetlights and brick sidewalks. The oak and pecan trees shading the streets are some of the oldest and largest in Texas, and have guarded centuries of residents as they stroll through town. Markers preserve the memories of the Chisholm Trail, which ran through downtown as a commerce trail that moved cattle to auction. Residents delight in this history, and many have chosen to carefully preserve their own homes and neighborhoods as well. Because of this, the town has over 180 homes and buildings listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Georgetown supports nearly 29,000 residents within in its 22.8 square mile border. The average resident is 37 years of age with a median household income of approximately $55,000 and average home value of around $140,000. Nearby Austin offers a hotbed of entertainment, and was named by Fortune Magazine one of the country's Five Intellectual Capitals. This designation was given in part to the seven universities in the area, including Southwestern.
